Microwave Power Station for Japan

Anyone remember SimCity 2000? Apparently folks in Japan have; they are actually building the microwave power station option from the game...

.: 700 Dissenters on GW.

Fifty nine additional scientists from around the world have been added to the U.S. Senate Minority Report of dissenting scientists, pushing the total to over 700 skeptical international scientists – a dramatic increase from the original 650 scientists featured in the initial December 11, 2008 release. The 59 additional scientists added to the 255-page Senate Minority report since the initial release 13 ½ weeks ago represents an average of over four skeptical scientists a week. This updated report – which includes yet another former UN IPCC scientist – represents an additional 300 (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the initial report’s release in December 2007.

Fusion Tests going along in USA

They hope to have their first more energy out than in test this year. Let's hope they do it so that Fusion gets closer than "decades" away, as it's been all of my life.

Micro-Wind Turbines... Location Location Location

It just goes to show that the best you can do is to do your homework with regards to what kind of alternative energy you choose, and where to do it.

It not a panicea.
The Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust commissioned a study last year to review electricity output from 21 small wind turbines in the state and the results were surprising: the data showed that the estimated production was about three times higher than the turbines' actual production.

Increased Number Think Global Warming Is “Exaggerated”

Increased Number Think Global Warming Is “Exaggerated”

GW is "real". The question is what is causing it. The sun or Human CO2. Me, I am convinced it's the former.

Energy Companies moving to Switzerland

Energy Companies moving to Switzerland

a wave of energy companies has in the last few months announced plans to move to Switzerland -- mainly for its appeal as a low-tax corporate domicile that looks relatively likely to stay out of reach of Barack Obama's tax-seeking administration
Need I say more? Raise taxes lose jobs, and the fed loses income taxes. Lower taxes = more jobs and the feds get more tax income.

Rocket science this is not!

Kennedy knew it, Clinton knew it; it wasn't only Reagan and Bush (Republicans) who knew/did it!

Upbeat On Uptick

Upbeat On Uptick

It was in March 1938 that the uptick rule — requiring that a short sale be made only at a price "higher than the last different price" — was first established.
...
We also hope that the market's reaction is similar to that after the original rule was set. After undercutting 100 on March 31, 1938, the Dow industrial average shot up 50% in four months. Yesterday's 390-point rally, with the uptick-rule news getting at least some of the credit, looked like a pretty good start.
Yesterday's good news no doubt was a combination of Citigroup's profit and this. While many in the financial industry don't seem to think the uptick rule will help any; some do, but none think it will hurt. Studying panics of the past, it's usually about confidence. As much as we all like Obama, all the verbal attacks on Wall Street makes it nervous. A nervous Wall Street means prices going down. A little confidence will go a long way, and I'm hopeful for the best.

Scale of US Energy Usage and How it Relates to Reneweable Energy

WSJ Oped on the Scale of US Energy Usage

This op Ed has some great points about US energy usage and what options we have with fossil fuel alternatives. He converts everything into one useful equivalent form of energy, and then shares the scale with you.

Highlights:
1 barrel of oil = 1.64 Mega Watt hours of energy (your electric bill is in Kilo Watt hours)
1KW-hour = 1000x less energy 1 MW - hour
45,493,000 megawatt-hours = total renewable energy produced in US in 2008 All sources
4,118,198,000 megawatt-hours = total US 2008 electrical energy produced including Above
So, renewable is currently 1.1% of total Electric production

45,493,000 megawatt-hours = 27.7 million barrels of oil equivalent (renewable energy)
76,000 barrels of oil per day = (27.7 million barrels / 365 days)

47.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day = US Total energy (Oil, Nuke, Nat Gas, Hydro, etc)

of that 47.4 Million Barrels of oil equivalent used by the US each Day!
- actual oil = 19 million barrels per day
- natural gas = 11.9 million barrels per day equivalent
- coal = 11.5 million barrels per day equivalent
- Nuke = 3.8 million barrels per day equivalent
- Hydro = 1.1 million barrels per day equivalent
leaving 100,000 for everything else (solar, wind, wood, etc)

The point being that no matter what we do, it's going to take a long time to make enough solar panels, wind turbines, and whatever else we need to replace all of that. Forgetting the huge sums of cash (gas stations, refineries, pipelines coal mines, oil rigs, cars, gas and oil heaters in residences, oven ranges) invested in what we want to replace.

A Rational Take on GW

Op Ed piece in the Boston Globe on GW

If all that were happening on the climate-change front, do you think you'd be hearing about it on the news? Seeing it on Page 1 of your daily paper? Would politicians be exclaiming that global warming was even more of a crisis than they'd thought? Would environmentalists be skewering global-warming "deniers" for clinging to their skepticism despite the growing case against it?

No doubt.

Market Comebacks After the Crash

Market Comebacks After the Crash

The point of this link is to say no to pull your cash out of your investments. You probably should have last year before it tanked, but who can time such things. Now, best just leave it alone and use a good plan to save your assets; ie more aggressive when you are young and have less cash; less the closer you get to retirement.
