This is not a single-stage-to-orbit," she said. "This is a suborbital, hypersonic vehicle that will also allow us to do advanced hypersonic testing as well. And of course we are going to launch a payload into orbit
We’re looking for radical and disruptive changes," said former NASA astronaut Pamela Melroy, now deputy director of the Tactical Technology Office at DARPA. "We are about demonstrations. It’s not enough to just experiment. You have to actually prove it.

EyeNetra Aims to Shake Up Optometry with Financing from Vinod Khosla | MIT Technology Review
This one points to not only the optical shakeup, but that of other technologies. the point here is this. the cell phone in your pocket is an incredibly powerful device. with a few clever add ons, it can do a lot more, particularly in the area of health. it should help us have more, and better information about patients that should help improve the overall health of society.
DARPA's Plan to Flood the Sea With Drones, Carrying More Drones | Danger Room | Wired.com
I think this is a great idea. Drones provide information. That can make the use of force safer and more efficient. These drones will, as with most military tech, be adapted in some form for other efforts just as planes, satellites, and even rockets were before them. Better fishing, conservation, and even weather forecasts will be the result of this.

Jeff Goodell did himself a disservice in this exchange with Anthony Watts. t's clear his comments will be supported by those who already agree with him, perhaps that is the purpose, but I doubt folks on the other side will be convinced since his words are insulting to them. Energy bill could alter electricity rates for millions in California - latimes.com
i dont see the problem with this. i mean solar customers use the grid as "storage" to get their power back at night, so why wouldn't they have to pay for the grid that they are using. The Sierra Club is insanely wrong on this one. This fee is a very practical solution.

The Wireless Way to Save Health-Care Costs | MIT Technology Review
I think this is a good thing, and I am glad he's on the case. I think critics are misunderstand his point over his examples. Every time someone uses the cheap option over the expensive one, people save. More, cheaper tests will help everyone, and end up being good for everyone. My big hope is to see more of this in the home.

Union Square Rampage Leaves Man Brain Dead At Bellevue « CBS New York
I have to blog this one to get it out there since the national media is not. Leshawn Marten, according to wittnesses said ‘the next white person who walks by I’m going to [expletive],’, and then he did in fact in effect kill Jeffrey Babbitt; who is now clinically brain dead. This is clearly a hate crime since Mr. Martin is black, and Mr. Babbitt is white. Why the national media will not report this is anyone's guess, but my belief is that it doesn't fit in their preferred model that only white men are racists. The fact is that anyone can be, and that it's not only a white on black issue. It's a hate issue, and a problem for all groups.

Project puts gardens on bus roofs to purify city air | Crave - CNET
I know someone who helps maintain those busses in NYC. This is an epiclly stupid idea. We can't get those guys to keep them running in top form, and you expect them to keep plants alive? Seriously? Building rooftops, sure, but busses? idiotic. Solar panels, sure, why not, but again, in most large cities with their tall building generating shadows, again stupid. Solar panels on top of a parking garage, on the other hand, a fine idea.
Global cooling: Arctic ice caps grows by 60% against global warming predictions | Mail Online
This in and of itself is weather. There are plenty of verified pictures and accounts on the net going back decades and longer showing that we have had much more and much less ice there at this time of year. The fact is it's highly variable on short, medium, and long term trends. While I am one who does not support AGW, I do support climate change as a theory. One only needs to walk to the glacial scratch marks on several pieces of exposed bedrock in central park NY to see it. Here are a few pictures that I took myself. The fact is that climate does change. Another fact is that weather can produce significant changes year to year that often can make the longer trend harder to see. So, last year's low was no more evidence of warming than this years greater ice coverage number. Of course, it does do one thing; disprove many of the extreme doom and gloom predictions from the past 5-10 years that said we'd have no ice in the Arctic by now. That, at least, this does prove.

Rodman says he met North Korean leader again
Okay so I am not the biggest fan of President Obama, I voted for him the first time, but not the second since he didn't do what I hoped on a few issues I had prefererred his opinions on, and was worse on the issues I disagreed with him on. So, I'm not his biggest fan. That being said, in NO way, is Dictator Kim better than President Obama. Huge insult Mr. Rodman to the president.

RICHARDS: Five years of financial denial - Washington Times
'via Blog this'
This guy is 100% correct. The government should not be encouraging people who can't afford to buy a house to buy one by lowering the credit standards. Now, if the government want's to partially back some loans to make them more affordable, i.e., lowering the risk to the lender and thus lowering the rate to the buyer, that's one thing. That's a distinctly different thing than lowering the criteria to get the loan in the first place. That's the mistake the government made, that they are still making, and not owning up to.

"Are trees in Central Europe defying climate change?" http://feedly.com/k/137tZbP
Is anyone reallt surprised since, regardless of recent climate change drivers, clearly over millions of years, it has been much colder and warmer than now. Most tree species have exhisted for at least a few of, and actually quite a few more, glacial cycles which are tens to hundreds of thousands of years long each.
